Food Grade Hydraulic Hoses: What You Need to Know

Why Food Grade Hydraulic Hoses Matter

In the food and beverage industry, hydraulic systems power everything from filling and packaging lines to processing equipment and agricultural harvesting machinery. Where there is any possibility of hydraulic fluid contacting food, beverages, or food-contact surfaces, the hoses used must meet specific food-safe material requirements. Using a standard industrial hose in these environments is not just a quality issue — it is a regulatory compliance failure that can result in product recalls, loss of certification, and serious legal liability.

What Makes a Hose “Food Grade”?

A food grade hydraulic hose must be constructed from materials that comply with relevant food safety regulations for all surfaces that could come into contact with food. The two principal regulatory frameworks are:

  • FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) 21 CFR: Specifies which materials are acceptable for food contact applications under US regulation. Many international food manufacturers require FDA compliance even outside the USA, as it is a widely recognised benchmark.
  • EU Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004: The European framework regulation governing materials and articles intended to contact food. Requires that materials do not transfer constituents to food in quantities that could endanger health, cause unacceptable changes in the food, or cause deterioration of the taste or smell.

Hoses marketed as food grade should carry documentation confirming compliance with the applicable standards. Always request and retain this documentation as part of your food safety management system.

PTFE vs Rubber for Food Grade Hose Applications

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) Hoses

PTFE is the material of choice for the majority of food grade hydraulic hose applications. Key advantages include:

  • Chemical inertness: PTFE does not react with or absorb virtually any chemical, food product, or cleaning agent. It is the most chemically resistant inner tube material available.
  • Wide temperature range: PTFE hoses operate from -65°C to +260°C, making them suitable for hot steam cleaning, CIP (Clean-in-Place) procedures, and both chilled and heated process applications.
  • Non-stick surface: The smooth PTFE bore does not harbour bacteria or allow product build-up, which simplifies cleaning and reduces contamination risk.
  • Broad regulatory acceptance: PTFE is approved under FDA 21 CFR and EU food contact material regulations for a wide range of applications.

Food Grade Rubber Hoses

Food grade rubber hoses are available for lower-temperature applications where PTFE is not required. They use inner tube compounds formulated to comply with food contact regulations and are suitable for transferring food products, beverages, and dairy under moderate pressure and temperature conditions. They are generally less chemically resistant than PTFE and have a narrower temperature range, so specifying the correct compound for the specific application is important.

Temperature Ratings and Cleaning Compatibility

Food and beverage equipment is subject to regular cleaning regimes that can be demanding on hose materials:

  • CIP (Clean-in-Place): Involves circulating hot caustic and acid cleaning solutions through the system at elevated temperatures. PTFE hoses handle CIP procedures very well; rubber hoses should be checked for compatibility with the specific cleaning chemicals and temperatures involved.
  • Steam cleaning: PTFE hoses can handle steam sterilisation. Standard rubber hoses generally cannot — confirm the temperature rating before use.
  • Low-temperature applications: Chilled food processing environments demand hoses that remain flexible at low ambient temperatures. PTFE hoses maintain flexibility across a very wide range.

Application Examples

Food grade hydraulic hoses are used across a wide range of applications in the food industry, including:

  • Agricultural harvesting machinery (combine harvesters, harvesters for fruit and vegetables) where harvested product may contact hose surfaces
  • Food and beverage packaging and filling machinery where hose routing passes close to product contact zones
  • Dairy processing equipment where regular steam and chemical cleaning is part of the process
  • Brewery and drinks production equipment
  • Bakery and confectionery manufacturing lines

Specifying the Right Food Grade Hose Assembly

When specifying a food grade hose assembly, provide:

  • The bore size and working pressure requirement
  • The temperature range — both process temperature and cleaning/sterilisation temperature
  • The fluids that will contact the hose (hydraulic fluid, product, cleaning agents)
  • Any specific regulatory compliance requirements (FDA, EU, organic certification body requirements)
  • End fitting types required
