Why a Good Hose Reel Makes a Difference
A quality hose reel keeps hoses tidy, protects them from kinking and premature wear, reduces trip hazards, and makes work significantly more efficient. Whether you are running hydraulic hose, air line, water hose, or electrical cable, selecting the right reel for the application is important — the wrong choice can result in hose damage, pressure drops, or a reel that simply does not work well in the space available.
Spring-Rewind vs Manual Rewind Hose Reels
Spring-Rewind (Auto-Retract) Reels
Spring-rewind reels use a coiled spring mechanism to automatically retract the hose when released. They are convenient for high-frequency use environments such as workshops, tyre bays, and production lines where the hose needs to be pulled out and stowed repeatedly throughout the day. Spring-rewind reels keep the floor clear automatically, reducing trip hazards without any manual effort from the operator.
Considerations:
- Spring tension limits the maximum hose length — longer hoses require heavier springs, and very long runs may not retract reliably
- The retracting hose can cause whipping if not controlled — ensure the reel is positioned correctly for safe retraction
- Spring mechanisms require periodic lubrication and can wear over time in very high-use applications
Manual Rewind Reels
Manual reels are rewound by hand using a handle or crank. They are better suited to situations where the hose is extended infrequently or for long periods, or where very long hose lengths make spring retraction impractical. They are generally simpler and more robust than spring-rewind types for heavy-duty applications.
Open vs Enclosed Drum Reels
Hose reels are available with open or enclosed (covered) drums:
- Open drum: The hose coils are visible and accessible. Good for applications where the hose or reel needs to be checked regularly. Generally lower cost.
- Enclosed drum: The coils are contained within a protective cover. Offers better protection against dust, impacts, and UV in exposed environments, and gives a neater appearance. Preferred in food industry, clean-room, and public-facing environments.
Mounting Options: Wall vs Ceiling vs Floor
Hose reel mounting position should be chosen based on the work area layout and how the hose will be used:
- Wall mounting: The most common arrangement. The reel mounts on a bracket fixed to the wall, usually at or above head height to keep the hose clear of the floor. Suits most workshop and garage applications.
- Ceiling mounting: Ideal where wall space is limited or where the hose needs to drop vertically from above to the work area. Particularly useful in production lines and over vehicle inspection pits.
- Floor/swivel mounting: A swivel-base floor stand allows the reel to be positioned flexibly in the work area. Good for large open spaces or where the work position changes.
- Vehicle mounting: Compact reels designed for fitting to vans, trucks, or agricultural vehicles. Must be rated for the vibration and exposure conditions of mobile use.
Hose Capacity and Pressure Rating
Two key specifications when selecting a hose reel are:
- Hose capacity: Expressed as the maximum hose bore and length the reel can accommodate. Do not exceed this — overfilling a reel causes kinking and premature hose wear at the drum flanges.
- Working pressure: The reel must be rated to at least the maximum working pressure of the system. Hydraulic reels for high-pressure applications need much more robust construction than reels used for air or low-pressure water lines.
Always check that the swivel union on the reel (the rotating connection that allows the drum to turn while maintaining a sealed fluid path) is rated to the required pressure.
Matching the Reel to the Hose
The reel must be compatible with the hose bore diameter and the fluid being conveyed. Using a reel designed for water or air on a hydraulic system is not appropriate — the swivel and drum seals must be compatible with hydraulic oil. Similarly, the hose bore must match the reel’s inlet and outlet connections to avoid creating a flow restriction.
